Join Us In Celebrating 175 Years of Ministry in Atlanta!

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible…

surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 11:1-3, 12:1-2)

This year Atlanta First United Methodist Church celebrates its 175th anniversary. Founded in 1847, the church has a long history of service to God and the community, nurturing the spiritual lives of many of Atlanta’s notable and philanthropic leaders. Standing on their shoulders, we now look FORWARD IN FAITH. We look forward to worship that offers renewed vision for the future, forward to Christian education that fosters radical faith formation, and forward to one-of-kind affordable housing and justice ministries that change lives.

Each week highlighted some of the major themes in the life and legacy of Atlanta First, focusing on topics like discipleship, race, connectionalism, ecumenism, art, architecture, music, family-formation, education, land development, and more. Below you will find recordings of the events and sermons by our guest preachers. We thank everyone who joined us in the Celebration of our 175th!

Gregory L. Fenves

Sunday, September 18, 2022

Our guest preacher on Sunday, Sept. 18 is Gregory L. Fenves. Fenves was named Emory University’s president in 2020. During his first two years, he has led the university through the challenges of a global pandemic by setting priorities and establishing policies to unite the community, bolster public health, and advance learning, teaching, research, and creative expression—all while charting a course for Emory’s future. He has also focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, launching a series of university initiatives aimed at strengthening Emory’s commitment to social justice. Considering three of Emory University’s past presidents were senior ministers of Atlanta First UMC (I. S. Hopkins served Emory 1884-1888 and First Church 1898-1897, Charles E. Dowman served Emory 1898-1902 and First Church 1905-1906, and James Edward Dickey served Emory 1902-1915 and First Church 1916-1920) President Fenves’ voice and presence in worship means a great deal to this 175 celebration. We honor our historic commitment to higher education and look FORWARD IN FAITH to continued nurturing of the next generation of Christian leaders in Atlanta and beyond.
